With the new NBA season about to begin in just a few weeks, all the talk lately has been centered on the continued refusal of some NBA players to get vaccinated against COVID-19. There have been several debates on the issue, including the ones pouring over on social media, and Portland Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum couldn't help but weigh in.
McCollum, who was elected as president of the NBA Players Association (NBPA), just this August, took to Twitter to point out a fact that somehow has gotten lost in all the polarizing takes.
“I think it’s important we don’t lose sight of the fact that 90% of the league is vaccinated. Happy Monday.”

But of course, while 90 percent is indeed a good vaccination rate, the NBA would like it to reach a full 100 percent. McCollum, with his position in the NBPA, could probably encourage his peers to get vaccinated before the season begins. He could even cite the Trail Blazers as an example. On Monday, team president Neil Oshley proudly shared that the Trail Blazers are 100 percent vaccinated.
Of course, McCollum respects the choice of other NBA players like Kyrie Irving, Andrew Wiggins, and Jonathan Isaac to refuse inoculation, and he just wants to dwell on the gains of the majority—after all, 90 percent is pretty laudable—than the few.
Besides, if some NBA players continue to say no to vaccination, it would create conflicts within their respective teams, which should be viewed as an advantage by CJ McCollum and the Trail Blazers.
