The city of Byrnes Mill has canceled its annual Fall Festival, which had been set for Oct. 2.

Mayor Rob Kiczenski said the event was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

“We’ve been watching the coronavirus events and monitoring Jefferson County Health Department and it’s (looking) bad,” he said. “Every week the numbers keep going up and it just doesn’t seem to be getting any better and to take a chance to expose our citizens and our board members and our employees, to me it just isn’t in my mind’s eye worth it.”

Kiczenski said the board came to a consensus to cancel the event.

“For us to have the event and have one child or one person get sick because of that and contract the virus isn’t worth it,” he said.

In 2019, City Administrator Debbie LaVenture said about 250 people attended the annual event, which is always held the first Saturday in October at Byrnes Mill City Park. The event was also canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic.
