South Bend public schools facing shortage of substitutes to drive buses

Progress, not perfection. That's what South Bend school leaders are focused on with challenges facing the corporation's transportation system.

Before classes began in August, administrators were confident in their plan to fix bussing issues that have plagued the system for years.
But since August, 14 bus drivers have left.
Like so many places, South Bend is having a tough time finding people to fill these jobs.
District leaders told me today that all bus routes are filled.
However, they have very few subs.
That means when someone calls off, there are disruptions.
