Coronation Street's David Platt received a stern warning from wife Shona in tonight's double bill (September 27), after he lied about "son" Max Turner's thieving ways.

Last week, Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) accused Max (Paddy Bever) of nicking bank cards out of his wallet following their recent clashes at school. As Max insisted that he didn't, David backed him up – a decision he came to regret in this evening's episodes.

Adamant that Max was innocent at the start of the first instalment, though, David (Jack P Shepherd) reported Daniel to the school for grabbing the youngster's jacket in his angry state, and the pair were called in for a meeting with deputy head teacher, Mrs Crawshaw.

While he apologised for assaulting Max, he stuck to his guns about the stolen wallet, which led a frustrated David to urge Daniel's boss to sack him. He went on to say that if she didn't, he'd take matters into his own hands.

Back at the house, Shona (Julia Goulding) criticised David for covering for Max, and the couple rowed. Meanwhile, Crawshaw advised Daniel to back down so as not to risk his job over something seemingly unprovable – but things got more complicated when he discovered that David had reported him to the police for assaulting Max.

Later, the youngster tried to use Daniel's money to buy a few things at the Corner Shop. When the card declined, Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) aired his suspicions to David about the awkward moment. Realising the truth, David pretended that the card Max was using was his, and joked that the teen had probably run his account into its overdraft.

"Sit down!" he barked at Max when he next saw him. "You weren't at school this afternoon. Don't even think about lying to me, Dev's been round. I put my neck on the line for you, I've reported Daniel to the police! Look at me when I'm speaking to ya! Give me the wallet now!"

But his reprimanding was cut short when Gail interrupted, asking for help with Audrey's birthday party plans.

"How could you lie to us like that?" Shona quizzed Max, when the family returned home and resumed their interrogation. "Are you even sorry?!"

In a follow-up scene, Daniel was relieved to find out that David had dropped his complaint against him, meaning his suspension from school had been lifted. After chatting with Dev about Max's card mishap, though, he confronted David again.

Panicked, David doubled down on his earlier account, that the declined card was his and that he'd given it to him to buy a pizza, leaving Max delighted to be off the hook.

"Nice one," Shona said sarcastically, suggesting that David should've come clean to Daniel. "He should've been taught a lesson, but now you've just taught him it's okay to lie and steal. You really think he's gonna behave now? Because I think you've just made this a hundred times worse."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
