Road construction projects will temporarily close two Macomb County thoroughfares and a longtime short-cut through Roseville is set to be permanently shut down.

That’s the latest update from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), which is overseeing the  projects. One is a rebuild of Gratiot Avenue in Roseville and the other focuses on Hall Road (M-59):

• The Gratiot program was scheduled to shift traffic from the inside left lanes onto the newly rebuilt outside right lanes on Monday. The work is expected to be completed by 6 p.m. Monday and the two lanes were to be re-opened.

• For drivers heading north, the Gratiot direct left-turn movement to northbound Utica Road was expected to be closed permanently starting Monday. Motorists are directed to use the next open crossover to access northbound Utica Road.

MDOT says the new configuration of Utica Road will result in safer conditions for both motorists and pedestrians.

• Starting at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 12 Mile Road is scheduled to close at Gratiot in order to allow road crews to rebuild the median lanes of the intersection. Twelve Mile will be accessible only for local traffic between Groesbeck Highway and Interstate 94.

MDOT says the 12 Mile closure will allow contractors to replace sewers, curb and gutter, sidewalk, and pavement at the intersection.

Motorists heading eastbound on 12 Mile will be detoured via southbound M-97 to eastbound I-696, then eastbound 11 Mile Road (exit 28) to northbound Little Mack Avenue to get back to eastbound 12 Mile.

Motorists heading west on 12 Mile will be detoured via southbound Little Mack to westbound 11 Mile,  then westbound I-696 to northbound M-97 (exit 26) to get back to westbound 12 Mile.

Pedestrians looking to cross Gratiot will be detoured to Common Road, a half-mile north of 12 Mile.

MDOT says 12 Mile is expected to re-open to traffic at 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11.

The project is part of MDOT’s $65 million, two-year effort to rebuild Gratiot between 11 Mile and 14 Mile Road.

• Meanwhile, another closure is expected to begin next week, about eight miles north of 12 Mile.

Westbound M-59 will be closed from between Gratiot and North Avenue from 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4 until 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11. Conversely, the eastbound lanes will shut down at 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 18 through 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25.

This closure is due to the rebuilding of the railroad crossing on M-59 between Groesbeck Highway and Gratiot Avenue in Clinton and Macomb townships.

Drivers are advised to use 21 Mile Road to get around the construction.

The construction is part of a $63 million, two-year rebuild of 4.5 miles of Hall Road between Interstate 94 and Romeo Plank Road in Clinton, Chesterfield, Harrison and Macomb townships.
