Man detained after attacking officer in Kennedy Plaza

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – A Providence police officer was attacked while trying to apprehend a suspect in Kennedy Plaza on Sunday night.

Commander Thomas Verdi confirmed to ABC6 that officers responded to a call around 9 p.m. that there was a man with a gun in the 7-Eleven at Kennedy Plaza. Officers found the suspect on Weybosset St, where he was standing with two other men.

One of those two men, Rashan Floyd, started to run away, and an officer pursued him on foot. Police say the suspect jumped out from behind a building and attacked the officer.

Additional officers responded, and saw the suspect on top of the officer, punching him. Police say he was tased and detained.

The officer who was attacked had his injuries treated at Rhode Island hospital.

Floyd was arraigned in Providence District Court on Monday. He is charged with:

  • Assault of a police officer and other official
  • Attempted larceny greater than 10,000
  • Threat to public official
  • Resisting legal or illegal arrest

The incident is under investigation.
