The Southern Nevada Health District says it will have COVID-19 vaccine boosters available for those eligible at its clinics starting Tuesday.
The Health District says Pfizer boosters will be provided for those who completed a two-dose series of the Pfizer vaccine at least six months ago.
People eligible for the booster shots are:
- people 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings,
- people aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions,
- people aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot based on their individual benefits and risks, and
- people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster shot based on their individual benefits and risks.
Anyone eligible can walk into a clinic to receive their booster as resources are available. Only Pfizer shots will be provided.
Health officials said booster availability is not an issue for the public, so if you’re eligible, they encourage you to stop in.
“It’s important because it does boost your immunity, so it gives you maximal protection basically,” said JoAnn Rupiper with the health district. “As you get older, your immune system doesn’t quite work as well, so that’s why we want to boost the immune system for that group.”
Rupiper said you may experience some side effects like a sore arm or fever similar to getting the first and second dose.
Right now, SNHD isn’t taking appointments for the booster, but walk-ins are allowed as their appointment system gets updated.
Additional doses of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are also available for people who are immunocompromised and have completed the two-dose series at least 28 days prior.
