Record-breaking goal makes ESPN Top 10 plays

UWM’s Jelena Sever scored the fastest goal in NCAA Division I history, sending the game’s opening kickoff into the Youngstown State net as part of a 7-0 Panthers win Sunday at Englemann Stadium. The official time was clocked at 3.2 seconds, besting the previous NCAA record of 4 seconds.

Video of Sever’s incredible feat can be seen in the full game story on the UWM athletics website. Sever’s goal also caught the attention of Good Morning America and made ESPN’s Top 10 plays of the day, checking in at No. 4. That, Sever told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, drew a lot of attention.

“I would say it’s definitely overwhelming,” Sever said. “I’ve just been processing it all day. I didn’t even know it was blowing up that much until I went on social media; I’ve never seen this many notifications on my phone. Family members, friends, all texting me.

“It’s cool to put us on the map, but I don’t see it too much as a personal thing. The fact we won, 7-0, is even bigger.”
