Colorado Department of Transportation is auctioning off a piece of property it owns south of Durango.

Those interested in viewing the property can attend an open house from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 14 at the property.

The property is located at 102 Short Place on the west side of U.S. Highway 550 on the Florida Mesa in La Plata County, near Sunnyside Elementary School, said CDOT spokeswoman Lisa Schwantes. It includes a 2,016-square-foot home with three bedrooms on 1.91 acres. The value of the property has been appraised at $435,000.

Those interested in placing a bid must do so by 12:59 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21.

CDOT has purchased land from property owners along the corridor as part of its project to improve and widen Highway 550.

An agreement to purchase the property was reached between CDOT and the previous owner, but now CDOT has determined the property is no longer needed to complete the project, so it is auctioning it off.

“We’ve been working with property owners along the highway to acquire property that will help us obtain the additional space we need to widen the roadway, and this was one of those properties,” Schwantes said. “We’ve determined that we are not able to use the entire piece of property, so going down those avenues we decided it was time to put it up for auction.”

More information about the property and the bid package is available on CDOT’s website.
