MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 24-year-old man is facing charges after he was accused of killing his father and wounding his mother at their home in Miami-Dade County.
Miami-Dade police officers responded to the home on Saturday night along Southwest 16th Street, between Southwest 72nd and 73rd avenues in Miami-Dade’s Coral Terrace neighborhood.
According to the arrest form, when officers arrived they heard screaming and found Marlon Herrera attacking his mother, Odalys Herrera. Officers found his father dead.
“They’re great people, they just had a problem, you know, with their son,” said Phil Acosta, the victims’ neighbor.
Detectives arrested Herrera and he was booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center early Sunday morning. On Monday, he appeared in front of Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Mindy Glazer.
“You are going to stay in jail,” Glazer told Herrera.
Glazer also said Odalys Herrera had been critically wounded. Jose Juanes, a relative, said she remained at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center on Monday afternoon.
Acosta said he heard Herrera arguing with his parents late Saturday night.
“It was more or less him, he started, you know, like yelling and screaming ... throwing stuff. That’s when stuff escalated, and then they called the police, and the police showed up in 5 minutes. I guess it was too late,” Acosta said.
Records show the Florida Department of Corrections released Herrera, a convicted felon, on Feb. 8. He had been convicted in a Nov. 26, 2017 burglary of an occupied dwelling.
Prosecutors charged Herrera with second-degree murder with a weapon and attempted second-degree murder.
