Gas Line Relocation Work to Begin on South Atherton Street

Drivers are likely to encounter delays as Columbia Gas begins gas line relocation Tuesday on South Atherton Street in State College, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

This week’s work will take place between the intersections of Highland and Hill alleys. Overall relocation work will occur between the White Course Drive intersection on North Atherton Street and the Westerly Parkway intersection on South Atherton Street.

One lane will remain open in each direction during the work. Flaggers will provide traffic control, and occasional stops to move equipment will be necessary, according to PennDOT.

Relocation work will take place during daylight hours for the coming week, but overnight work is likely to follow the week of Oct. 4. PennDOT will issue an update before the start of overnight work.

The work is part of the next phase of PennDOT’s Atherton Street improvement project, which will span from the Curtin Road intersection to the Westerly Parkway intersection.

Substantial work is expected to begin next spring and will also include sewer and water line replacements; roadway, drainage, pedestrian and traffic signal improvements; and streetscape additions along a portion of the work area.

Work is scheduled to conclude in early summer 2024.

A similar, three-year project on North Atherton Street between Aaron Drive and Curtin Road concluded last summer.
