Apple TV+‘s Foundation is a sprawling science fiction epic based on Isaac Asimov’s dense Foundation series. It’s a collection of novels and short stories that span hundreds of years in a vast universe full of androids, archivists, emperors, warriors, and a villain known as “The Mule.” Foundation‘s first two episodes do their best to initiate viewers into this complex world with divergent timelines and narration that nods at legends to come. But how much of Asimov’s work can Foundation viewers expect to see brought to life? Essentially: how many seasons of Foundation can we expect on Apple TV+?

To answer that question, Decider went to the man in charge: Foundation creator and showrunner David S. Goyer. In addition to asking Goyer about all the massive changes his “remix” of Asimov’s work makes, we asked if Goyer has plans for a Foundation Season 2. As it happens, Goyer not only has plans for a potential Foundation Season 2…but also a Foundation Season 8.

“I don’t wanna jinx myself, but Apple knew that this was a big undertaking and they wanted to make sure that I was writing towards something. They asked me the same question, they said, ‘In a perfect world, how many seasons do you have in mind?’ and I said, ‘Eight.’ They said, ‘Can you take us through all eight [seasons]?’ and over the course of about two hours I did take them through all eight [seasons], so hopefully we’ll get there,” Goyer said. “We’ll see.”

Foundation Season 1 introduces us to Professor Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) and his theories of psychohistory. Seldon believes that math can predict a grim future for the galaxy and that only a “Foundation” of archivists working to preserve human knowledge can help shorten the impending dark age. The series follows the drama of creating this Foundation as well as the colony’s first crisis about thirty years in the future. Upcoming episodes will also delve into Gaal Dornick’s (Lou Llobell) backstory and the emotional strain haunting the cloned Emperors (played by Lee Pace and Terrence Mann).

Time will tell if Apple TV+ will buy into Foundation for a second, third, or even eighth season. However Goyer has already laid the groundwork for his eight season arc in Foundation Episode 1, when narrator Gaal namechecks not just Salvor Hardin (Leah Harvey), but the still un-introduced Hober Mallow and The Mule. No word, however, if Goyer has any plans for Prince Weinis.
