The University of Utah football star was shot and killed while attending a house party in Salt Lake City over the weekend.

According to Salt Lake Police, Lowe was outside and across the street from the house party when the shots were fired.

The 21-year-old was in his third season playing for Utah and was the first recipient of the Ty Jordan Memorial Scholarship, an award created in honor of former Utah player Ty Jordan who was killed after an accidental shooting in December 2020.

Lowe was a cornerback with the Utes and played on special teams.

Police said the tragedy started because uninvited people showed up at the house party on the 2200 block of South Broadmoor St.

"They were asked to leave by people who were hosting the party. That's when there was a disturbance and that is when there was the shooting that occurred,” said Brent Weisberg with Salt Lake City police.

Police said they had received six calls specific to noise complaints but noted that those types of calls typically get backlogged during the spring and fall weekends.

The female victim who was shot and wounded in the incident is currently in critical but stable condition. She is helping the police with the investigation, along with several members of the public.

Officials said they do not know who hosted the party and the shooter's motivation is unknown at this time.

An estimated 50 to 100 people were attending the party but police do not have an exact number.

Police said the situation was chaotic as many people left as police arrived at the scene of the shooting.

“This was a very chaotic situation, and we believe those people left during the chaos,” Weisberg said during Monday's press conference.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call (801) 799-3000 and reference case number 21-176828.
