There has been a ton of reaction from the hockey world after a game in Europe made headlines in North America for a terrible and racist gesture directed at a black player. Andrei Deniskin was caught on camera pretending to peel and eat a banana after mixing it up with black combatant Jalen Smereck during a game in the Ukrainian Hockey League (UHL).

Anthony Duclair of the Florida Panthers Tweeted video of the incident and said a lot hinges on what officials determine is the proper punishment for this type of action.

"Am I surprised? No," said Duclair. "This is still a huge issue in this game. Can't wait to hear this punishment, a lot on the line for the future of this game."

Former NHLer turned analyst Kevin Weekes was very blunt in what he thought was an appropriate punishment.

"Hello [International Ice Hockey Federation] and [UHL]. Hoping your decision is minimum 1 year suspension without pay in all league and international competitions," said Weekes. "This player's actions are both hurtful and inexcusable. I eagerly await your appropriate and punitive response."

Former NHLer Georges Laraque also weighed in, calling for a lifetime ban.

Deniskin apologized for his action following the game, which took place on Saturday. However, many felt the apology was insincere.

"During the match, I, being of negative emotions, displayed a gesture that could be considered as an insult [relating to] race," Deniskin said.

"I respect all people regardless of their race or nationality. Emotions in hockey, unfortunately, are different."

Smereck is an American who was born in Detroit. He spent several seasons in the Arizona Coyotes system playing in the AHL and ECHL. He has responded to some Tweets of support.

The UHL has stated that Deniskin, who is from Ukraine, will be punished but has not yet stated what the penalty will be.
