Microsoft Surface Duo 2 Will Receive Three Years Of Android Updates

The newly-launched Microsoft Surface Duo 2 will receive three major Android OS updates, the company has confirmed. The device will come running Android 11 out of the box and get updates through Android 14. Microsoft is also promising three years of security updates for its latest dual-screen phone.

“We are committed to providing three years of OS and security updates,” a company representative told Android Authority.

Three years of OS updates is the most offered by any Android OEM as yet. Google had led the line for years but Samsung, OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi have recently jumped on the bandwagon as well. Samsung has been the most impressive in this regard though. While the likes of OnePlus and Xiaomi will offer three generations of Android OS updates to their latest or upcoming flagships only, the Korean behemoth has promised the same generosity to all flagship devices launched since 2019 as well as several mid-rangers.

Moreover, Samsung has also committed to offering four years of security updates to all its Android smartphones. Not even Google matches that commitment but three years of security updates aren’t bad either. Microsoft is now making sure that its Surface Duo 2 gets the same level of software support like most other premium Android smartphones.

However, the company needs to improve on its update pace. It also promised three years of Android OS updates to the original Surface Duo last year as well. But even when Android 12 is about to go official, the device has yet to receive the Android 11 update.

Microsoft did recently confirmed that Android 11 for the Surface Duo is in the works. “We remain committed to providing updates to Surface Duo, and we’re working to bring Android 11 to existing customers before the end of this year,” a company spokesperson said. But a company of Microsoft’s stature should be able to roll out updates faster than this. Hopefully, things will get better in the coming years.

Surface Duo 2 fixes all major complaints with its predecessor

Microsoft unveiled the Surface Duo 2 alongside a bunch of other Surface-branded products last week, including the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Go 3 Windows laptops. The second-gen dual-screen Android smartphone from the Windows giant brings tons of improvements over its predecessor.

The Surface Duo 2 features a faster and more up-to-date chipset, triple camera setup, bigger battery, 5G connectivity, NFC, and a bunch of other improvements over the original Surface Duo. Time will tell if this incredible niche phone has enough audience in the market. Meanwhile, if you’re one of the few Surface Duo owners, be on the lookout for Android 11 later this year.
