No. 25 Hoyas Best No. 21 Musketeers

WASHINGTON – The No. 25 Georgetown women's soccer team took down No. 21 Xavier in overtime Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 win. Junior Gia Vicari came in with a brace to send the Hoyas back to the District with a win under their belt on the weekend. Georgetown moves to 1-0-1 in the BIG EAST and 5-0-5 on the season and give Xavier their first loss as they are now 1-1-0 in the BIG EAST and 8-1-1 overall.

Head Coach Dave Nolan

'First off, this was a very big win coming off a disappointing tie the other day. This opening weekend was a real challenge, two teams not too close together having to travel on the road and be away from home for five days presents issues. We played well in Thursday's game, but maybe didn't get our rewards and today's game was probably the exact opposite. This is a very difficult place to play because it's a small field and the surface is challenging as an artificial surface so it came down to who was going to gut out a result, make plays, and which team could stop the other from making plays. Overall, I thought we did a great job with all that. We scored early, but we were disappointed to give up the goal off a free kick because we normally defend free kicks very well, but give their player credit she made a difficult finish look easy. In the end it came down to who could make the play and who could limit the other team's chances.  I felt that we were the team most likely to score and then we got into overtime and it came down to who had the legs left to make a play.'

How it Happened

  • The Hoyas and Musketeers both came out heavily attacking and both sides having shots on goal in the first ten minutes of action.
  • Late in the first half, freshman Eliza Turner saw space at the top of the box and launched a shot to the middle of the goal. Senior keeper Olivia Jenkins deflected the shot and Vicari came through to finish the second ball.
  • The Musketeers and Hoyas traded possession and chances through the second half with both sides having equally dangerous goal scoring opportunities.
  • Junior keeper Allie Augur made two saves for the Blue & Gray to help keep the Musketeers with just one goal.
  • The Hoyas came out firing in the first half of overtime as junior Julia Leas tackled an Xavier player to win the ball. Leas found Vicari on the edge of the 18-yard box who was able to beat her defender and slot the ball across the goal over Jenkins' left shoulder and into the top right of the goal.

Of Note

  • With the two goals today, Vicari has seven goals in the fall season.
  • Leas was dominating in the midfield for the Hoyas and tallied her fourth assist this year.
  • Georgetown had two corners as Xavier had three.
