The United States Postal Service held a hiring event Saturday as part of its effort to boost employment numbers and bring mail deliveries back up to speed.
Tom Ouellette, the manager of strategic communications for USPS says more than 130 cars drove to the post office off Brentwood Drive in Northeast Washington for the event.
Others decided to walk up.
Part of the group was Markeith Harrod.
"Hope you'll see me bring your mail to you in the future," he said.
7News On Your Side has been reporting on a number of mail delays for months.
"We're always trying to improve service and this is a step to doing just that," said Tom Ouellette, manager of strategic communications for USPS.
He says the goal is to increase the workforce by 100,000 nationwide by the end of 2021.
Another 40,000 jobs are planned to open for the holiday season, which begins on October 1, but the exact amount needed in the DMV isn't clear since it fluctuates from week to week.
7News On Your Side asked if a majority of the jobs coming to the DMV are for letter carriers or folks in the plant.
"In our area, D.C. and the surrounding area, it's about 50/50," said Ouellette. "You’re only as strong as your weakest link, so if there’s any breakdown in our system, we have a problem, so we’re going to address it. We’re always looking for ways to improve service, ways to improve operations and obviously having the right people in the right places is a big part of that solution."
It's not the only solution though.
Ouellette says there's also a major investment in the vehicles as well as the machines to improve processing, all of it with the goal of improving customer service.
