Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse police say a man who drove off and crashed into a pole after an altercation Sunday night on Tipperary Hill was drunk.

The driver, 36-year-old Joseph Husein, was charged with driving while intoxicated after he crashed outside McAvan’s Pub at 1217 W. Fayette St., Syracuse police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Malinowski said.

“There was an altercation, (Husein) left in his car after and struck a pole,” Malinowski said.

Someone called 911 at 8:32 p.m. to report the crash, dispatchers said. The caller said they saw the driver pull out of the bar parking lot and hit the pole, according to police dispatches. The caller also said the driver was not injured, but he appeared intoxicated.

Syracuse police later confirmed Husein was the driver and he was under the influence at the time of the crash, Malinowski said. Police did not provide any details about the altercation.
