Men’s Soccer Nabs First NEC Win at St. Francis

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack men's soccer team, anchored by the defense and strong performance by goalkeeper Alvaro Rodriguez, worked a 1-0 win on the road against St. Francis to open up conference play on Sunday.

The Summary
  • Defensively, the Warriors were ready for the opening challenge by the Red Flash on the road contest. Saint Francis had seven shot opportunities and had four on target saved by Rodriguez.
  • Closing out the first half, Merrimack notched what would be the game's only goal. The Warriors were on point in the midfield, settling down a second ball attempt for Carlo Romei. Romei saw the opportunity for Pesenti, getting the outside edge on his defender before taking the pass. With a head of steam, Pesenti raced into the box and fired of a hard shot in from eight yards out for the lead.
  • Merrimack came out in the second half defensively stout to protect the lead. Rodriguez fanned four shots on goal and ten shot attempts, with the Warriors negating four corner kicks for the Red Flash.
Stats & Figures
  • The shutout is the second for Rodriguez on the season and the first for the win, with his first collegiate clean sheet coming against Boston University in a 0-0 draw.
  • Defenders Romei and Trym Kyvaag both played the full 90 minutes for the Warriors and were key in clearing out the box on the afternoon.
  • Shots on goal in the contest for Merrimack came from Alessandro Negri, Johan Feilscher, Nick Bernardi, Kyvaag and Pesenti.
