Tessa Trate advanced all the way to the quarterfinal round of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Saturday when she earned a pair of wins and moved on to the final eight via walkover. Senior
Reagan Delp will play Sunday with a chance to join her in the quarterfinals as she also won twice to advance to the Round of 16.
The CNU women's tennis team wrapped up the first day of action at the 2021 ITA Southeast Regional Championships with eight total wins in singles play including six in the championship draw. Rookie
Raine Weis joined Delp and Trate with a win in her first small college championship appearance, defeating Franklin & Marshall's Samantha Perry by a final score of 6-1, 6-2 in her debut.
Delp also picked up her first round victory over a Diplomat, taking down F&M's Jenna Harrison (6-3, 6-3). She then advanced to the second round to face Haverford's Emily Oh and dispatched of her in straight sets as well (6-3, 6-0). The senior All-American will take on Co-No. 9 seed Sarah Yang from Carnegie Mellon University in Sunday's Round of 16.
Trate's historical run to the quarterfinals started with a quick victory over Virginia Wesleyan's Alexa Brewster (6-0, 6-1). The No. 5 seeded Captains sophomore then outdueled Carnegie Mellon's Megan Qiang in the second round (6-3, 6-4) and was slated to face Southern Virginia's Paula Snelson in Sunday's Round of 16. The Knights do not play on Sunday due to Institution rules, so Trate advanced to the quarterfinals by walkover (player canceled).
Following the Round of 16 action on Sunday, Trate will take on either Co-No. 9 seed Natalia Garcia-Molina or Margaret Carlton.
Elsewhere in singles action on Saturday,
Kendra Womack captured a victory in the B2 draw. She defeated Nikki Simhambhalta from Sweet Briar College, 8-2. She will take on Alessandra Armour (Ursinus) in the B2 Draw semifinals on Sunday.
While the Captains had success in singles play, all four doubles tandems entered into the ITA Regionals suffered first round losses on Saturday. Womack and
Ana Clara Borga played a tight match in the B1 draw before suffering an 8-6 setback to Keira Gunning and Inka Zeilstra of Averett University. In the championship draw, Delp/Weis fell to Ava Givone and Crystal Zhou (CMU), 8-2; Trate and
Amanda Yermal lost to Hana Kimmey and Emily Beckner (UMW), 8-3; and
Megan Bauer paired with
Logan Glen for an 8-3 setback to Washington & Lee's fourth-seeded Taylor Garcia and Margaret Carlton.
