When it comes to football, what could be more dramatic than a field goal in the final seconds to win the game? The answer to that might be a game-ending field goal that wins the game and sets a new league record in the process. An that’s precisely what happened in today’s matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and the Detroit Lions. As the game came to a close, Ravens placekicker Justin Tucker pulled off a 66-yard field goal — and the Ravens won 19-17.
Tucker’s kick eclipsed the previous record, a 64-yard field goal, set by Matt Prater in 2013.
The matchup made for thrilling viewing, with Detroit taking the lead late in the game after being down by 13 earlier in the day. A 36-yard conversion on a 4th and 19 play helped get Baltimore in range. Then Tucker’s kick hit the crossbar, bounced in the air, and went over — prompting the Ravens faithful to erupt in cheers.
It was a day for absurdly long field goal attempts in the NFL, apparently. Earlier in the day, in the Cardinals-Jaguars game, the aforementioned Matt Prater attempted a 68-yard field goal at the end of the first half. Unfortunately, that didn’t go quite as expected — the kick fell short and was recovered by the Jaguars’ Jamal Agnew, who proceeded to carry it 109 yards for a touchdown.
In a day abounding with records, Agnew’s carry tied the mark for the longest touchdown return in league history. And for fans looking for stunning achievements on the gridiron, there were plenty to be found.
