Eddie Murphy has landed a huge three-picture and first-look film deal with Amazon, following the success of long-awaited sequel Coming 2 America.

Under the pact, the actor and comedian – who has appeared in titles such as Dreamgirls, Saturday Night Live, Shrek and Trading Places over the years – is set to appear in a trio of movies for Amazon Studios, and develop original projects for the streaming platform.

"Eddie is a legend both in front of and behind the camera," said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios.

"With undeniable comedic and dramatic genius, he consistently delivers entertaining, original stories and characters to audiences around the world. We could not be more excited to help carry on the tradition and to officially welcome Eddie into the Amazon family."

Coming 2 America, which was released in March 2021, saw Murphy reprise his role of King Akeem Joffer from the 1988 original. Starring opposite fellow returning player Arsenio Hall, it sees Akeem and Hall's character Semmi embark on a globe-trotting adventure from their great African nation to the borough of Queens, New York – where it all began.

It earned mixed reviews, earning a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes as opposed to its predecessor's 72%, but was the most-streamed title in the US during the week of its premiere, according to Nielsen data.
