Police: Newark man charged with attempted murder for Kearny Walmart machete attack

A Newark man has been charged with attempted murder for a machete attack at the Kearny Walmart on Friday, police said.

Roberto Delgado-Gonzalez, 29, of Newark, was charged with criminal attempt murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, the Kearny PD posted on their website.

On Friday around 10:27 p.m., Kearny police detectives arrested Delgado-Gonzalez, 29, of Newark, near 237 South Orange Ave. in Newark without incident.

The charges stem from an assault involving a machete that allegedly occurred inside the Kearny Walmart 12 hours before the arrest.

Delgado-Gonzalez is also wanted by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and has active warrants issued from Merchantville Borough Court, Cherry Hill Township Court, and Denville Municipal Court.

He was processed and remanded to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

Additionally, the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, and Newark Police Department were all credited for assisting in the matter.
