That’s What They Said: Chase Ross Commits To Marquette

Here, we’re going to take a run through all the various reactions to Ross’ commitment that we could find across the internet. First things first, how about the archive of his announcement interview with Zach Schumaker?

Let’s turn our attention to this article from 247 Sports’ Brandon Jenkins. Here’s what Ross said about his recruitment by the Golden Eagles, who beat out Georgia, Rutgers, Texas A&M, and West Virginia when it came down to it:

“The whole coaching staff believed in me,” says Ross. They were recruiting me while they were at Texas. I just had a deeper connection with the whole coaching staff. They all gave their pitch during the summer and when I went there for my official visit it felt like home. I like Coach Shaka’s philosophy and how their playstyle is run and gun.”

I do like getting information about what Shaka Smart’s Marquette teams are going to look like from how he’s pitching it to recruits. After all, we’re still more than a month away from getting to actually see his first team on the court.

Here’s Ross telling us what kind of player to expect:

“They are getting a player who will guard the best player on the opposing team and be versatile by attacking the rim, passing, and making shots offensively.”

Ross also talked to Joe Tipton for On3.com. Here’s how he described his expectations for the 2022-23 season, his first as a Golden Eagle:

“My first year I’ll probably be a role player that can make an immediate impact, get on the floor, and guard 1-3. Also, get points on the wing.”

And what he’s looking forward to the most in Milwaukee. Interestingly, he did not say custard at Kopps.

“Just the atmosphere. It’s a basketball school. I’m happy to be able to see people on campus and get to know people.”

Let’s now turn our attention to Rivals and this article from Dan McDonald. Here’s what he said under “what is Marquette getting?”

The good news from Ross gives Marquette the type of wing that can be a really good player in the Big East the new few years. At 6-foot-5, he has the length, athleticism and defensive intensity that should allow him to thrive under Shaka Smart, particularly if he brings back his havoc-style full court pressure he used in his time at VCU. Ross is also a really smooth scorer in the paint with his ability to finish with authority at the rim or pull up short with a floater or a finish off the glass. He’s a more than capable three-point shooter as well. He’ll be a fun one to watch in the backcourt for the Golden Eagles alongside fellow 2022 commit Sean Jones.
