Rockets waive Matthew Hurt

The Houston Rockets made a roster move this weekend and trimmed their roster a bit when they released forward Matthew Hurt, according to The Athletic.

Hurt had been on a two-way deal with the Rockets, but the 6’9” 21-year-old had a pretty underwhelming Summer League, averaging just 2.2 points and 1.8 rebounds.

Hurt was undrafted out of Duke and was thought to be a three-point specialist, shooting a career 42.1 percent from deep in college, but he just couldn’t find his niche on a crowded Houston roster, and how he’ll be looking for a home somewhere else.

The move opens up a roster spot for the Rockets and also opens up an additional two-day deal, but there’s been no indication yet as to what direction Rafael Stone will go with the opening. Houston could always sign another camp body for next week, or they could offer the extra two-way deal to an Exhibit 10 player like Armoni Brooks. I’d expect that to be the most likely route, as the Rockets have been pretty pleased with Brooks’ development as a shooter so far.

No telling what happens to Hurt now, but a stint overseas wouldn’t surprise me.
