Neil Gaiman's The Sandman has revealed a first look teaser at last, in a minute long clip which sets up the arrival of the powerful Dream.

The teaser, which was released as part of Netflix's TUDUM virtual fan event yesterday (September 25), sets the scene in a suitably creepy mansion as robed figures gather for an occult ceremony.

Roderick Burgess (The Crown actor Charles Dance) leads the ceremony with a speech about the group's aim, announcing: "Tonight we will achieve what no one has even attempted. We will summon and imprison Death".

After offering up a sacrifice made up of a coin made from a stone, a feather pulled from an angel's wing and blood from himself, Roderick summons Death, who promptly falls from the sky wrapped in a cloak.

After investigating, the cult find that they have summoned Dream / Morpheus (The Hollow Crown's Tom Sturridge) and the Lord of Dreams is quickly imprisoned.

And, as Netflix teases in its synopsis, Dream's troubles will be far from over once he is freed from captivity, as he turns his attention to restoring order to the kingdom of the Dreaming.

We can also expect to see Dream's fellow Endless in action – Destiny, Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium and Destruction.

The long-awaited series, which has been in the works for several years, will also star Doctor Who's Jenna Coleman, Star Wars actress Gwendoline Christie, Narcos actor Boyd Holbrook and Harry Potter's David Thewlis, among a number of other big names.

The Sandman started life as a comic book for DC and creator Gaiman serves as executive producer and co-writer on the Netflix series adaptation, after a plan for a feature film version was scrapped.

Gaiman promised earlier this year that comic fans have nothing to fear from the new series, which is "being made for people who love Sandman by people who love Sandman".

There is currently no set release date for The Sandman on Netflix.
