Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Arizona Cardinals: Facts, figures, series history and more

ROOKIE QB WATCH

The interceptions continued last week for Trevor Lawrence, and the Jaguars' No. 1 pick wasn't alone.

Four of the 2021 NFL Draft's five first-round quarterbacks saw action in Week 2 Sunday, while third-rounder Davis Mills made his NFL debut for the Houston Texans. Those five threw a combined eight interceptions.

Here's a look at the 10 rookie QBs and how the ones who played fared.

Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars

Clemson | Round 1, Pick 1

Lawrence got the Jaguars on the board first, leading an 11-play, 83-yard drive for a touchdown on the first drive of the game. Lawrence capped the 5 minute, 39 second drive with 25-yard pass to Marvin Jones Jr.

The rest of the game wasn't as pretty. Lawrence finished 14-for-33 for 118 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions (to Kareem Jackson and rookie Patrick Surtain II) as Denver won 23-13.

Zach Wilson, New York Jets

BYU | Round 1, Pick 2

Wilson had a day to forget, throwing four interceptions in a 25-6 loss to the Patriots. Wilson threw interceptions on three of the first four Jets drives. His first two pass attempts of the game were picked off, and he also opened the second half with an interception.

Wilson finished 19-for-33 for 210 yards, four interceptions and four sacks.

Trey Lance, San Francisco 49ers

NDSU | Round 1, Pick 3

Lance didn't get into this game, as starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was just good enough to lead the 49ers to a 17-11 win over the Eagles.

Justin Fields, Chicago Bears

Ohio State | Round 1, Pick 11

Fields was forced into action when starting QB Andy Dalton got injured in the second quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals, with Chicago up 7-0 and driving. Fields came in for a short relief, but Dalton returned to the field before getting injured again.

Fields struggled at times, finishing 6-for-13 for 60 yards and an interception. He had 30 yards rushing. The Bears still won thanks in large part to a pick-six for 53 yards by linebacker Roquan Smith.

Mac Jones, New England Patriots

Alabama | Round 1, Pick 15

The Bolles School product had a safe day, going 22-for-30 for 186 yards in a 25-6 win over the Jets. While he watched fellow rookie Wilson trying to throw deep balls and getting picked off, Jones played much more conservatively while spreading the ball around to seven different receivers.

The run game scored both touchdowns, Nick Folk was 4-for-4 on field goals against his former team, and Jones kept the mistakes to a minimum, something Bill Belichick likes to see.

Davis Mills, Houston Texans

Stanford | Round 3, Pick 67

Mills was forced into action when Tyrod Taylor got injured in Sunday's loss to the Cleveland Browns. Mills' NFL debut was OK as he played the second half: 8-for-18 for 102 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

DID NOT PLAY: Kyle Trask (Tampa Bay Buccaneers, round 2, pick 64), Kellen Mond (Minnesota Vikings, round 3, pick 66), Ian Book (New Orleans Saints, round 4, pick 133), Sam Ehlinger (Indianapolis Colts, round 6, pick 218)

SLOW GO FOR J-ROB

After his breakthrough rookie season as an undrafted free agent in 2020, James Robinson hasn't found the opportunities as plentiful in his second season with the Jaguars. He has only 72 yards through two games — he gained 1,070 in his rookie year — although his yards-per-carry average remains 4.5.

But sophomore stat drop-offs (often affected by injury) are the norm for the Jaguars over the last quarter-century. Here's how other notable Jags rushers have fared going from year one to year two.

James Stewart

1995: 137 carries, 525 yards, 2 TD, 3.8 average

Maurice Jones-Drew

2006: 166 carries, 941 yards, 13 TD, 5.7 average

2007: 167 carries, 768 yards, 9 TD, 4.6 average

T.J. Yeldon

Jaguars by the numbers

3: The number of teams since the AFL-NFL merger to lose more consecutive games than the Jaguars' 17. The dismal trio: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (26, 1976-77), Detroit Lions (19, 2007-09) and Houston Oilers (18, 1972-73).

21.1: The yard line of the Jaguars' average starting field position, the most unfavorable in the NFL.

91: The yardage of the Jaguars' most recent special teams touchdown before Jamal Agnew's 102-yard kickoff return last week against Denver. Keelan Cole took a punt back 91 yards against the Packers on Nov. 15, 2020.

378: Days since the Jaguars' last NFL victory (Sept. 13, 2020 against the Colts).

419: Passing yards allowed when the Cardinals last came to Jacksonville. Carson Palmer shredded the Jaguars' defense on Nov. 17, 2013, with touchdowns of 14 yards to Larry Fitzgerald and 91 yards to Michael Floyd. No Jaguars from that game's active roster remain.

Oakland fans stand and cheer as Raiders defensive tackle Jerry Ball (93) runs into the end zone for a touchdown after an interception late in the fourth quarter against the Jaguars on September 15, 1996. Jaguars head coach Tom Coughlin, at left, looks on in frustration.

JAGUARS TIME CAPSULE

The 2021 season marks the 25-year anniversary of the Jaguars' run to the 1996 AFC Championship game in their second season of existence. As the season progresses, the Times-Union will take a week-by-week look back at that campaign.

Week 3: Raiders 17, Jaguars 3 (Sept. 15, 1996)

The Jaguars' first trip to the West Coast was no day at the beach. Aside from a 33-yard Mike Hollis field goal in the third quarter, the Jaguars found ways not to score. The enduring image from the game: 330-pound nose tackle Jerry Ball lumbering upfield with an interception from Mark Brunell, 66 yards to the end zone. Despite twice picking off Raiders quarterback Jeff Hostetler, a former Giant from Tom Coughlin's days on Bill Parcells' Super Bowl-winning staff, Jacksonville couldn't convert Oakland's many miscues into victory. The result: 1-2.
