UPDATE

Following a 16-10 road win over the South Carolina Gamecocks, the Kentucky Wildcats have checked in at No. 23 in the latest Coaches Top 25 Poll. Making it even sweet is one of the spots they took was from the North Carolina Tar Heels, who are no longer ranked after opening the season as a top 10 team.

The Florida Gators checked in at No. 9, setting up a massive Week 5 clash of top 25 clubs.

As for the latest AP Top 25, Kentucky was not included but did receive the sixth-most votes outside the top 25, which means they’re effectively ranked No. 31 in the country. Florida checked in at No. 10.

Go Cats!

The Kentucky Wildcats are now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in SEC play following their 16-10 road win over the South Carolina Gamecocks.

In many years, that would be good enough to earn a spot in at least one of the AP/Coaches Top 25 Polls, and a good argument can be made for both sides of the debate whether the Cats should be ranked or not.

On one hand, 4-0 is 4-0, and it’s never easy to start 2-0 in SEC play, as evidenced by the fact Kentucky has accomplished this for just the second time since 1977, the last being 2018.

However, the Cats’ wins thus far are over 2-1 Louisiana Monroe (went 0-10 in 2020 and never led in a game), 2-2 Missouri, 1-2 Chattanooga (an FCS team), and 2-2 South Carolina. Not exactly a murderers’ row, and barely skating by the Mocs alone is a tough sell for being a top 25 team.

The good news for Kentucky is AP Top 25 teams North Carolina, Kansas State and Wisconsin all lost this week, so Kentucky may very well be one of the 2-3 new top 25 clubs if those three fall out of it.

So, we’ll ask you, should the Cats be ranked in the AP and/or Coaches Polls when they’re released later today?
