That there are thousands of people who would leave everything and everyone and travel great distances at great peril to live in the shade under a bridge in the shadow of America makes one wonder … what kind of hell are they fleeing that could make this squalor an improvement; a safer place with a brighter future?

John Crivits, St. Paul

Felons are the problem

The article headlined “Department asks for help getting illegal firearms off streets” should read “Department should ask for help getting felons off streets.” Sure getting the firearms off the street would be a worthy accomplishment but a near impossible order. Besides the weapons are not the threat, it’s all the felons who shouldn’t be on the streets using these weapons.

The crimes of these felons are never taken seriously until someone is dead. These delinquents are ruining our Capital City with street racing, robberies, car-jackings and drive-by shootings. Why should they comply with any law as they know there are no consequences for their actions? They know they can steal a vehicle and run and they can’t be chased or stopped until they crash and kill themselves or an innocent family. They can drive without license plates and with equipment violations and cannot be stopped. They know if they’re arrested the system will release them on probation, bail or suspend their sentence. How many of our innocent children have been, or will be, killed in their crossfires and car thefts before we will lock them up? We are doing these young delinquents no good by pandering to them as we are only enabling their deadly life choices.

Leaving St. Paul

Goodbye, my beloved St. Paul. I am leaving you. And I am mad and sad about it. I’ve spent all my years here. Birth, school, got married, worked, and lived many retirement years here.

But, things have taken a turn for the worse, and it is not the same. I fear it never will be again.

Too much crime, violence, and a mayor, city council, and county board that do not care, and have basically abandoned you. They have their own agendas, and concern for the citizens be damned.

I spent my last night here sleeping with the window open. I love the sounds of the city.

The wail of the sirens in the night, both the St. Paul Police and St. Paul Fire, always gave me assurance that we were being protected and safe. But, they get no support either and cannot do the job that they had hoped to do. All my family has moved out of the city. The only family I leave behind are my grandparents, buried in Elmhurst Cemetery.

They would be heartbroken if they knew the way St. Paul has changed. I know I am.
