More than 130 cars drove to the post office off Brentwood Drive in Northeast Washington, and others walked up.
It was all part of a hiring event for the United States Postal Service.
Mekeith Harrod was one of the people who applied to be a mail carrier.
"Hope you'll see me bring your mail to you in the future," Harrod said.
7 News On Your Side has been reporting for months, mail hasn't been getting to USPS customers on time.
Tom Ouellette with the USPS says the goal is to increase the workforce by 100,000 nationwide by the end of the year.
"We're always trying to improve customer service and this is a step to doing just that," he said.
They'll look to do it with another 40,000 jobs this holiday season.
Ouellette says about half of the jobs are in the DMV area and that the hires should help folks get their mail faster.
"It's all one piece, honestly," he said. "You’re only as strong as your weakest link, so if there’s any breakdown in our system, we have a problem, so we’re going to address it. We’re always looking for ways to improve service, ways to improve operations and obviously having the right people in the right places is a big part of that solution."
He says USPS is also making a major investment in the vehicles as well as the machines to improve processing.
