UPDATE: Huntsville arson suspect faces additional charges

An arson suspect believed to be connected to the fires is in custody.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — UPDATE: October 1, 2021

Nicholas Tremaine Hubbert, who is in custody in connection with a string of arson fires across Huntsville, Madison, and Madison County, now faces additional charges.

In addition to the four arson charges previously filed, he now faces six charges of attempted arson.

He is being held without bond.

PREVIOUSLY:

Huntsville Police released an update on the fires that hit businesses across Huntsville, Madison and Madison County.

Police say 24-year-old Nicholas Tremaine Hubbert was charged with arson and booked into the Madison County Jail in the early morning hours of September 26.

Hubbert's bond was initially set at $60,000 but was revoked on September 28.

Investigators believe the fires were set intentionally at the following addresses:

  • Plato's Closet - 4851 Whitesburg Drive 
  • McDonald's - 1795 US Highway 72 East
  • Aldi - 2125 Winchester Road Northeast
  • Dollar General - 125 Winchester Road Northeast
  • Kroger - 6070 Moores Mill Road
  • Walmart - 6140 University Drive
  • Dick's Sporting Goods - 2718 Carl T Jones Drive Southeast

They said the businesses sustained varying levels of damage. No one was injured in the fires.

Huntsville Police and Huntsville Fire & Rescue are working with other area law enforcement agencies to investigate if the suspect is connected to intentional fires set in their jurisdictions.

The other two businesses, Champy's Chicken and Publix, are in Madison.

Nine fires in one day. That's what official are investigating after a string of blazes across Huntsville, Madison, and Madison County Saturday evening. All of the fires happened within hours of each other.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office says it is working with State fire investigators on a fire at the Dollar General on Winchester Road. Huntsville Fire Marshal Dan Wilkerson identified businesses affected by these fires as Champy's Chicken and the Publix near it in Madison, Plato's Closet (Huntsville), Walmart (Hwy 72 W), McDonald's (Hwy 72 E), Dick's Sporting Goods (Carl T. Jones Drive), Aldi's (Winchester Rd.), and the Moore's Mill Kroger location.

Champy's Chicken posted on social media that they will be open tomorrow for business as usual.

Plato's Closet is closed until further notice.

The fires remain under investigation. It's not known at this time if they are connected.
