The San Diego Police Department‘s traffic division announced plans for a DUI and license checkpoint somewhere in the city limits late Saturday night.
Officers will be stopping drivers between 11 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday to check for alcohol or marijuana impairment as well as proper licensing.
The checkpoints are usually announced in advance as a deterrent to people who might drink or smoke to excess than then get behind the wheel of a car.
“The deterrent effect of high-visibility enforcement using both DUI checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols has proven to lower the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol- or drug-impaired crashes,” the police department said in a statement.
The checkpoint location will be chosen based on collision statistics and the frequency of DUI arrests.
Police said they are now seeing more impaired drivers testing positive for marijuana and other drugs than for alcohol.
People caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspensions and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
