‘Night Court’ Sequel Starring Melissa Rauch & John Larroquette Gets Official Order At NBC

NBC has officially landed a series order to the planned Night Court sequel, which will serve as a follow-up to the classic legal sitcom.

The multi-camera comedy from Dan Rubin (Outmatched, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Melissa Rauch (The Big Bang Theory), went into development back in December 2020. It had secured a pilot order in May and has now been given the green light to move to network.

Based on the original half-hour comedy series created by Reinhold Weege, Night Court centers on overly enthusiastic judge Abby Stone (Rauch)—the daughter of the late Harry Stonewho was previously the center of the show. Abby follows in her father’s footsteps, presiding over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court while attempting to provide structure to a chaotic crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding (for whom John Larroquette will reprise his role).

Rubin writes and executive produces along with Melissa Rauch and Winston Rauch via their After January production company. Larroquette serves as a producer on the series from Warner Bros. Television, Universal Television and After January.

Pamela Fryman directed and executive produced the pilot which also stars Ana Villafañe (Younger), Lacretta and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist‘s Kapil Talwalkar.

The series is Rauch’s first major TV role after Big Bang Theory and according to Deadline, she was the driver behind the reboot as she approached Warner Bros. Television, where she is under a deal, about the Night Court IP.

Night Court does not yet have a premiere date and may air either midseason 2021/22 or 2022/23. This is based on a declaration made by Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, back in May that some of the broadcast network’s pilots would air in the middle of 2021/22 while others would roll over to the next season.
