Man who told officer he planned to rob someone arrested after brief standoff, police say

Syracuse, N.Y. – A man who told a police officer he planned to rob someone was arrested after a standoff Friday, police say.

At around 10:32 a.m., police were investigating reports of a possible stolen vehicle when they found Steven Rosario, 21, sitting in the driver’s side of the reported vehicle, according to a news release from Syracuse police.

When an officer approached Rosario and asked him what he was doing, Rosario told the officer that he was going to rob someone, police said.

While Rosario was talking to the officer, he pulled a handgun out of his waistband, police said.

The officer quickly grabbed the gun from Rosario and secured it. While grabbing the gun, the officer saw Rosario also had an open folding knife, police said.

Police then set up a perimeter and began negotiating with Rosario to get the knife away from him, they said.

Several units were called to the scene including a negotiator, a less-lethal shotgun operator and a K9 officer, police said.

After brief negotiations, Rosario came out of the vehicle and was arrested, police said.

The gun was discovered to be an illegally possessed unloaded KelTec handgun, police said.

Rosario was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a firearm.

He was issued an appearance ticket and released.
