Backup quarterback Drew Pyne finishes Notre Dame victory over Wisconsin

CHICAGO — Notre Dame starting quarterback Jack Coan limped off the field in the third quarter and never returned to the game.

Third-string quarterback Tyler Buchner, who saw action in Notre Dame's previous two games, was not available to play due to a hamstring injury that started bothering him last week against Purdue.

That gave sophomore quarterback Drew Pyne a chance to make his first meaningful impact of his college career. He took advantage of the opportunity and helped guide the No. 12 Irish (4-0) to a 41-13 victory over No. 18 Wisconsin (1-2) on Saturday in Chicago's Soldier Field.

Pyne completed six of his eight passes (75%) for 81 yards and one touchdown. His 16-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Austin Jr. gave Notre Dame the breathing room it needed with a 24-13 lead with 9:34 left in the fourth game.
