Braves reinstate Edgar Santana, option Dylan Lee

The Braves announced Saturday afternoon that they reinstated Edgar Santana from the paternity list and optioned Dylan Lee back down to Gwinnett. Lee is having a good season in triple-A, but didn’t pitch for the big league squad during his brief stint in the majors.

Santana has a solid ERA of 3.59 in Atlanta this season, but his peripheral stats present a much more mediocre picture of Santana’s performance. He has a 4.20 xERA, a 4.60 FIP, and a 4.04 xFIP, which are much more pedestrian than the ERA. What can be said is that Santana is established enough that he can be expected to be non-disastrous out of the Atlanta bullpen, given that he has a non-disastrous history in the majors. More arms to eat innings are always welcome in the current state of baseball, although it’s fair to wonder how many appearances a player like Santana might get for the rest of the season, given the magnitude of the remaining games as a result of the tight gap at the top of the NL East.
