TAMPA, Fla. — Crews are clearing the way for a new affordable housing complex in Tampa’s University area.

What You Need To Know

  • An affordable housing complex is being built in Tampa’s University area

  • Uptown Sky will make available housing for 61 families

  • Low-and moderate-income families will be able to apply in the next year

  • The complex is expected to be completed by early 2023

Located on the corner of Fletcher and 12th Street, the complex is called Uptown Sky. Once built, the place will provide affordable housing for 61 families.

Sarah Combs, chief executive officer of the University Area Community Development Corporation, has been working on the affordable housing project for the past five years.

“What we’re hearing on a daily basis from residents is that landlords are hacking up their rent, they’re getting outpriced,” Combs said. “So gentrification is happening.”

The University Area CDC partnered with Blue Sky communities for the project. In the next year, low-and moderate-income families will be able to apply to live there.

Uptown Sky is expected to be completed by early 2023.
