DART will test new, on-demand service
Des Moines Area Regional Transit is experimenting with an on-demand bus service.
Some riders said they're ready for their favorite mass transit system to move into the future. And DART is listening.
“We heard from our customers that a door-to-door option would be a better fit,” said Louis Montoya, DART's chief planning officer.
“They're really wanting to see access to more places. They're wanting to see shorter travel times. and more flexibility in how they travel,” Montoya said.
DART is announcing a pilot program called Micro Transit. Starting in November, a smaller bus will act similar to ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft.
It will operate in an area of Ankeny. Riders in this area can book on-demand, door-to-door trips using an app within the Ankeny zone.
They can also book by calling DART's customer service.
“Micro transit uses similar technology to Uber and Lyft where customers can book a trip on their mobile device. And they can see in real time when the bus will arrive, and where they're going to and even pay for it, all on their mobile device,” Montoya said.
DART said the service will be available from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The zone is bounded by Northeast 62nd Avenue in the south, Southeast Four Mile Drive in the east, 36th Street in the north and Southwest Irvinedale Drive in the west.
The DART app algorithm will determine how long the trips last and how many riders will have to share the bus.
One loyal rider said he'd use it to cut down on trip times.
That would appeal to me," rider Chris Higgins said. "I take the bus everywhere I go."
The pilot program is expected to last a year, officials said. The price for a ride during that time is $1.
