Bryson DeChambeau What’s In The Bag? 2024 Update
We take a look inside the 'Golfing Scientist' Bryson DeChambeau's golf bag
Bryson DeChambeau What's In The Bag?
Known as 'the Mad Scientist' or 'the Golfing Scientist', Bryson DeChambeau is an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour, including his first Major title at the US Open in 2020. He is known as one of the longest hitters in the sport, averaging over 323 yards in his last full season on the PGA Tour in 2021. He joined LIV Golf in 2022 and is the captain of the Crushers GC team.
DeChambeau won his first tournament on LIV Golf in August 2023, which included a new tour record 58 in his third and final round. The round also tied the record for lowest ever round in an elite-level men’s pro event.
Driver
What Driver Does Bryson DeChambeau Use?
When you think of Bryson DeChambeau you think of driver. That’s his calling card but because of how hard and fast he swings it, finding the best driver to suit his game has not always been easy. Who could forget his “the driver sucks” remark at the 2022 Open? Certainly not Cobra, that’s for sure. That comment went down like a lead balloon at Cobra HQ. While he should maybe have chosen his words a little more carefully, when it comes to equipment Bryson’s requirements are far more complicated than most Tour pros.
In recent years he has used a Cobra LTDx driver which had only 7.5 degrees of loft, but when his equipment deal was not renewed at the end of 2022 he then switched into a TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus for a while as well. Then came the discovery that turned his season around. DeChambeau turned up to the LIV Greenbrier event with a driver that nobody had really heard of before - a Krank Formula Fire LD Driver. He would go on to win the event shooting incredible weekend scores of 61 and 58. Unsurprisingly he could barely contain his excitement about his new toy afterwards. He wasn’t even swinging at his best yet he was hitting almost every fairway.
“Ever since I put this driver into play, it’s not been really my golf swing,” DeChambeau said. “It’s just hit on the toe, hit on the heel, everything comes back down the middle of the fairway, and I’m like, all right, pick up the tee and let’s go."
Fairways
What Fairway Woods Does Bryson DeChambeau Use?
Last year DeChambeau was carrying a Cobra Radspeed Big Tour 3-wood and a Cobra Speedzone Tour 5-wood which had 10.5 and 13.5 degrees of loft respectively. It’s worth pointing out that while we test the vast majority of clubs released by the big brands, Bryson’s specs are highly unique so while the names of these clubs may be familiar, the shafts, settings and specifications of them are generally nothing like those released to the general golfing public. What we can say is that the standard Cobra Radspeed fairway was our pick for the best fairway wood of 2021, so it was pretty good.

Bryson is always on the look out for better though and he has since switched out both of his fairway woods. He now has the same TaylorMade BRNR mini driver used by Tommy Fleetwood. Whereas Fleetwood has the 13.5 degree head DeChambeau has the 11.5 degree head cracked down to 9.5 degrees. So for Bryson it acts as a 3 wood, while he has replaced his 5 wood with a Krank Formula Fire fairway wood (set at 13 degrees).
Irons
What Irons Does Bryson DeChambeau Use?
As with most other things in his bag, DeChambeau often tinkers with his irons. Previously he had been using a couple of Cobra King One Length Utility irons (4-5) before transitioning down to Cobra King One Length MiM Tour irons which went from six-iron down to pitching wedge. All of his irons were seven iron length (37.5 inches to be exact) to ensure he swings the same with every club.
In 2023 he moved away from Cobra, ditching the utility irons as well as the Tour irons in favour of a set of Ping i230 irons which went from three-iron down to pitching wedge. As recently as December 2023 he was talking up all of his equipment on his own YouTube channel, so it was somewhat surprising that for the opening LIV event of the year DeChambeau was using a set of irons from a brand few had heard of.
Avoda Golf is a brand that currently sells just irons and caps, with its irons coming in both 'Combo' length and 'Same' length. It claims to have made the 'World's First Combo-Length Iron Set'.
Instead of all the irons being the same length, Avoda's 'Combo' length sees the lob wedge to 8-iron in the same length of 36 inches, which equates to a 9-iron length. The 4, 5, 6, and 7 irons then each come in variable length but slightly shorter than standard, and they have heavier heads to help maintain ball speed and forgiveness.
It remains to be seen whether these will be a permanent fixture in Bryson’s bag or if they are just another of the Golfing Scientist’s experiments. His preferred shaft in his irons are the LA Golf Rebar Prototypes so presumably they will stay regardless of whatever heads he settles on.
Wedges
What Wedges Does Bryson DeChambeau Use?
nterestingly, DeChambeau had some Artisan prototypes in the bag for a very long time but these have been swapped out for three Ping Glide 4.0 wedges (although we do believe he carries more with him when travelling.) His normal setup has 45, 56 and 60 degrees of loft. Again, as with his irons he opts for LA Golf Rebar Proto shafts.
We love the Ping Glide 4.0 wedges and certainly rate them among the best wedges we’ve reviewed in recent years. We found that the turf interaction was exceptional on short shots, making it one of the best wedges for chipping we’ve ever tested,
Putter
SIK Pro C-Series Armlock
Bryson started tinkering with arm lock techniques in 2017 and he has become a very good putter as a result. His putter of choice is the SIK Pro C-Series Armlock with a heavy LA Golf shaft and JumboMax JMX Jumboflat 17 grip.
GolfWRX spoke to SIK Director of Communications Tyler Finley about Bryson and he said; "We went through every conceivable option (even face-on putting) and the arm-lock proved to be the most consistent method we tried. It also is the method that we could best build a system around to quantify distance and face-angle at impact with the ability to max out the range of motion and create a true pendulum-type stroke. There is less breakdown in mechanics with arm-lock as there are fewer moving parts."
Interestingly the sweet spot of his putter is in the heel due to the weight of the shaft and it’s location on the putter head. Unorthodox, but that’s Bryson for you.

DeChambeau was using the Bridgestone Tour B X ball and he did have a contract with the company but that was mutually ended when he signed for LIV Golf. As such he is now using a Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash golf ball. The Left Dash ball according to Titleist; "is designed for players seeking a high flight similar to Pro V1x with dramatically lower full swing spin and firmer feel."
Titleist make some of the best premium golf balls money can buy and cater for a variety of needs. To find out which ball you should go for, check our our handy guide to the best Titleist golf balls.
Apparel/Shoes
What Golf Shoes Does Bryson DeChambeau Wear?
For many years Bryson wore Puma golf shoes but now that he does not have an apparel contract he is free to choose the best golf shoes out there and like many golfers he has opted for Footjoy golf shoes. He is currently wearing the Footjoy Hyperflex Carbon shoe which is a big favourite of ours too, earning the full five stars in our review due to them being among the most comfortable golf shoes we’ve tried as well as being one of the best golf shoes for walking.
