Throwback Tulsa: President Lyndon Johnson attends Eufaula Dam dedication on this day in 1964

  • 0

On this day in 1964, the giant Eufaula dam was dedicated by President Lyndon Johnson.

He threw a few partisan references into his speech that had been billed as nonpolitical and promised to keep the Arkansas River basin development on schedule.

"I'm here to assure you it will go on schedule," Johnson told the estimated 50,000 people who attended the dedication on Sept. 25, 1964.

"I just had to break my budget one time this year," he said. "When this bunch of Oklahomans came down and pounded that cabinet desk, it cost me $14 million but it got the Arkansas back on schedule."
