  • Almost 500 people are expected to ride Amtrak from the Twin Cities to Duluth this weekend. Earlier this month, Amtrak and the Duluth Convention and Visitors Bureau began a $40,000 advertising campaign to entice people to ride the train and view the fall colors.
  • The developers who plan to purchase the 100-year-old Fitger Brewery in Duluth are scheduled to make the deal final next week. They plan to convert the brewery into a multimillion-dollar complex that includes restaurants, specialty shops and a hotel.

  • Raids by federal agents this past weekend in the Grand Marais and Two Harbors areas confiscated four stills, 400 gallons of moonshine, and 2,000 gallons of mash. The 12 people arrested will be brought to Duluth to stand trial on federal charges.
  • The New Diamond Theater, completely remodeled since a fire destroyed its interior two months ago, will reopen today. The New Diamond was called the Savoy when it opened in 1905 and it was Duluth's first picture theater.
