The Headwaters Center for Lifelong Learning presents “The 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease” Tuesday, Sept. 28 at the Armory Arts and Events Center in Park Rapids.

The presentation scheduled from 1 to 2:30 p.m. is free to the public and handicap accessible.

Laurel Hed, a licensed social worker and geriatric care manager, will give insight and practical advice for dealing with memory challenges.

“Unlike many other terminal illnesses, Alzheimer’s robs the person of memory as well as who they were as a person,” Hed wrote in an article published in March.

Compared to diseases of the body where family can feel somewhat connected with their loved one, she wrote, “with Alzheimer’s there is a disconnect as they gradually forget who you are or even who they are.”

Hed has devoted her career to helping seniors and has a particular passion for working with people living with dementia. She also writes a monthly article in the Park Rapids Enterprise’s Generations supplement.

“It has been a wonderful way to share our journey with mom through her years of Alzheimer’s disease,” she said. “I also spent 14 years working in hospice, so now becoming a certified end-of-life doula has helped me to stay connected with another area that I appreciate working and helping in.”
