Michigan's 2001 NCAA Championship Team: Where Are They Now?

9/24/2021 1:52:00 PM | Field Hockey, Features

Twenty years ago this fall, on Nov. 18, 2001, the Wolverine field hockey program captured the first women's national title in the history of University of Michigan Athletics when it defeated top-ranked Maryland, 2-0, at Dix Stadium in Kent, Ohio. Michigan scored late in the first half and early in the second, then withstood a Terrapin barrage over the final 15 minutes to hold up the shutout -- and avenge U-M's loss to Maryland in the 1999 NCAA championship game.

The 2001 team finished with an 18-5 overall record and went 4-2 in Big Ten Conference play. After sweeping the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles the previous season, Michigan won neither in 2001. U-M entered the NCAA Tournament with the No. 7 ranking after dropping a 3-0 defeat to Ohio State in the Big Ten semifinals -- then did not lose again.

The Wolverines defeated North Carolina (5-2) and in-state rival Michigan State (2-1 OT) in NCAA regional play at Ocker Field to earn a trip to the NCAA semifinals, where they scored three second-half goals to overcome early deficits in each period to Princeton (4-2) and advance to their second NCAA final in three seasons.

A bulk of the 2001 UMFH squad will be back in Ann Arbor this weekend, celebrating the 20-year anniversary of their championship as part of the Weekend of Champions and the program's annual Alumni Weekend. Others will connect virtually and follow from across the country and, for a few, around the globe.

Here's a look at what the 2001 Wolverines are doing now, 20 years after making history:

Ali (Balmer) Gasperini

On the 2001 Roster: #18 | Midfield | Senior | Ephrata, Pa. (Ephrata)

After graduating I moved to Pittsburgh, where I was a teacher for 13 years and a high school field hockey coach for six seasons. After marrying my husband, Rich, and having our three girls, I became a stay-at-home mom. I now enjoy coaching Marie (8), Clara (7) and Lucy (4) in all their various sports, including youth field hockey! My experience playing and studying at Michigan taught me many skills that I try to instill in my own players and our daughters -- to have mental toughness, stay humble, be a leader and give it your all!

Erika Banuelos (2001)Erika Banuelos (current)

Erika (Banuelos) Holifield

On the 2001 Roster: #20 | Back | Sophomore | Escondido, Calif. (San Pasqual)

I currently live right outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, with my husband, former U-M wrestler Tony, my three kids, Alaina (14), Natalee (12) and Anthony "AJ" (8), and two dogs Maize and Diego. Since moving here in 2009, I have started my own photography business, Erika Holifield Photography, and recently was named one of Charlotte's top family photographers. I absolutely love my family and job, and I owe it all to my experience at Michigan for not only bringing my husband and me together, but for teaching me what hard work and dedication can do when trying to achieve goals. When I'm not photographing clients, you can find me in my car taxiing my kids to and from the softball fields and wrestling practices.

Jessica Blake (2001)Jessica Blake (current)

On the 2001 Roster: #21 | Forward/Midfield | Freshman | Perth, Western Australia (St. Mary's Anglican)

I am in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, where I work in construction project coordination and as field hockey coach, and I am near my family, including five wonderful nephews! There is no one memory that stands out from Michigan; it was a time of incredible shaping. From being saved by grace through faith in Jesus my freshman year, learning a new culture, the amazing opportunities to study under world-class experts, playing a sport I love with wonderful people, learning how far we could push ourselves mentally and physically, and, well, everything in between shaping me, I am forever thankful for the time at U-M.

On the 2001 Roster: #17 | Midfield | Redshirt Freshman | Ballwin, Mo. (The Whitfield School)

I live just outside Aspen, Colorado, with my boyfriend Greg and our corgi pup named Rugby. I've been here for almost 16 years and absolutely love the active and outdoorsy lifestyle. I am a real estate broker for Douglas Elliman Real Estate, selling and renting vacation homes in Aspen and Snowmass Village. Some of my most favorite memories from my time at U-M were just our team, hanging out, dancing, laughing and joking around on the bus, in the locker room, and on the field. I remember laughing til my stomach hurt and always having a blast -- no matter how sore my body/muscles were!

Kate Dillon (2001)Kate Dillon (current)

Kate (Dillon) Pfeifer

On the 2001 Roster: #5 | Back | Redshirt Freshman | Grand Rapids, Mich. (Forest Hills Central)

I'm living in Waterbury, Vermont, with my husband, Adam, and two girls, Veda (6) and Nieve (2). I am currently in my eighth season as the head field hockey coach at the University of Vermont. My years at Michigan showed me just how impactful a coach-player relationship could be. The lessons learned on Ocker Field shape how I coach, how I parent, and my overall mindset as I approach new experiences and challenging situations. I love coaching young women through these formative years and fostering their love of sport, competition and camaraderie. There is nothing like a long bus ride after a big win, or locker room time pregame with teammates. I'm so grateful for five wonderful years in Ann Arbor, the winning culture we were immersed in, the standards Marcia set for us, and particularly the lasting relationships I will cherish forever. I hope one day my daughters are fortunate to be part of a team that's as special as ours was.

On the 2001 Roster: #7 | Back | Senior | Happy Valley, South Australia (Westminster)

I live in Adelaide, Australia, with my partner, Sharon, and 5-year-old foster daughter, Sarah, plus Arthur, our quirky labradoodle! I am a state manager for Belgravia Leisure, lucky enough to be working in a job I love and responsible for 28 recreation and leisure facilities -- a mixture of aquatic centres, golf course, gyms, stadiums and caravan parks. Obviously winning the national championship in 2001 was an amazing highlight from my time at Michigan, especially as my parents were able to be over for the last part of that season. But above all else it really was a full team effort that won that championship. We really battled all season. We didn't have a lot of standouts; we just had a great team that all committed to giving it their all. Certainly the best part of the college experience as a student-athlete is the amazing friendships and support you get across the four years -- the other four members of my graduating class remain some of my best mates 20 years on and half a world away!

April Fronzoni (2001)April Fronzoni (current)

April (Fronzoni) Bertin

On the 2001 Roster: #12 | Forward | Sophomore | Larksville, Pa. (Wyoming Valley West)

I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with my husband Ryan Bertin (2x national champion Michigan wrestler), son Henry (9), daughters Olivia (7), Lily (5) and Mia (3), and our two-year-old labradoodle named Jack! After playing a few years on the U.S. national team once my Michigan playing days were over, I officially hung up the field hockey stick in 2008 and moved from player to coach! I was part of the Northwestern field hockey staff from 2008-10. I moved back to Ann Arbor from Evanston in September 2012 and since then have grown our family by one every two years -- that is until our Miss Mia entered the world in 2018 -- HA! I am currently coaching field hockey at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor with two fellow Michigan alums -- Jane Nixon and Katie Morris Valle -- all while playing nurse, bus driver, referee, chef, as well as a handful of other jobs at the Bertin household!

I have so many great memories from my time at Michigan; however, one thing that has always stuck with me is that hard work, sacrifice and a true belief in oneself and others can change the course of your life for the better, BUT what will forever be ingrained in my mind is when Marcia told us -- as we all huddled together after winning the national championship game -- which was, "I am so proud of each and every one of you, and for the rest of your lives, you will always be a NATIONAL CHAMPION!" No truer words have ever been spoken -- forever and always, GO BLUE!

Kristi Gannon (2001)Kristi Gannon (current)

Kristi (Gannon) Fisher

On the 2001 Roster: #6 | Midfield | Sophomore | Escondido, Calif. (San Pasqual)

I live in Dexter, Michigan, with my husband Jim (Michigan football, 2000-04) and our three kids, Jake, Kaci and Karli. I am an assistant coach for Michigan field hockey and still learning from Marcia every day, just in a different capacity. My experience as a student-athlete impacted my life in immeasurable ways. My best friends are my Michigan teammates, and I am so thankful for this group of women -- even more now than I was in 2001 when we brought the trophy home. We worked very hard to represent Michigan and those that came before us in this program, and I hope that I am able to help lead the current team to do the same. Go Blue!

Adrienne Hortillosa (2001)Adrienne Hortillosa (current)

Adrienne (Hortillosa) Garcia

On the 2001 Roster: #19 | Forward/Midfield | Freshman | Chula Vista, Calif. (Bonita Vista)

I reside in San Diego, California, with my husband, Mario, and our two kids, Julian (7) and Izabelle (5). After graduating from Michigan, I returned to San Diego and worked for a uniform company, Cintas, for almost 13 years in various management and sales positions. I ultimately decided to make a career change and go back to school. I now work as a registered nurse for Sharp Chula Vista on a cardiac specialty progressive care unit. In my spare time, I enjoy training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and taking the kids to their extracurricular activities. My favorite memory at Michigan was winning the national championship.

Anneke Huntzicker (2001)Anneke Huntzicker (current)

Anneke (Huntzicker) Flannick

On the 2001 Roster: #24 | Forward | Sophomore | Ann Arbor, Mich. (Pioneer)

I'm in Chicago with my husband, George, and our three children, Collins (8), Johnny (7) and George (4). I graduated from the University of Chicago with a master's degree in social service administration and now work as a geriatric medical social worker at a clinic on the West Side of Chicago. I also coach youth field hockey with Rise Field Hockey Club. Winning games and championships were of course highlights of my time at Michigan, but my favorite memories are just the fun times I spent with my teammates on and off the field. Twenty years later I still get texts from my teammates joking about the time I used the correct French pronunciation of the word "croissant" when ordering a turkey croissant at an Applebee's my freshman year. Every time I see my teammates and coaches it's like no time has passed. Michigan field hockey is a special program, and it is a privilege to be a small part of it.

Stephanie Johnson (2001)Stephanie Johnson (current)

On the 2001 Roster: #16 | Back | Redshirt Sophomore | Houston, Texas (The Kinkaid School)

I live in Brooklyn, New York, with my wife, Erin Moore, a former Michigan volleyball athlete, and our two pups, Miles, an 11-year-old Yorkiepoo, and Scout, a 1-year-old mini Bernedoodle. I work in marketing strategy and planning at the National Football League, which means I think about how we, as a league, bring in new fans and deepen connections with existing fans. My favorite memory from my time at Michigan is, as hard as we worked on the field, I loved that our team didn't take ourselves too seriously. Our locker and pregame karaoke and dancing were "Simply the Best."

Erin Kopelow (2001)Erin Kopelow (current)

On the 2001 Roster: #23 | Midfield | Redshirt Freshman | River Forest, Ill. (Oak Park-River Forest)

I live in Israel (Zichron Yakov), with three kids -- Ayela (9), Avichai (5), Gabriel (1) -- and a wonderful husband named Ariel. I have my own branding and marketing agency called The Expert Collective (TEC). Israel has an incredible level of innovation. We work with an array of companies (largely in the technological and SaaS space, but also hotels, skincare products, medical products, etc.) to define their brand identity, messaging and then produce their ongoing marketing collateral. I absolutely love it. We're an all-female team and have been remote from the beginning, which allows us to travel and maintain family time. My favorite memory of Michigan is during warm-up when we would all start out as individuals, but by the end, I could feel us clicking together into one unit. I always loved that feeling. I felt like a fighter jet, with a whole engine supporting every move, and hoped others could feel my energy supporting them.

Molly Maloney (2001)Molly Maloney (current)

Molly (Maloney) Pelowski

On the 2001 Roster: #1 | Goalkeeper | Sophomore | Lake Bluff, Ill. (Lake Forest)

I'm living in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, with my husband, Wally, and our two sons, Mitchell (6) and Marshall (3). After 13 years coaching collegiate field hockey, it was time to change gears. I graduated from nursing school in May 2021 and am now working as a registered nurse on a medical/surgical/pediatric floor at Mid-Michigan Health in Alma, Michigan. It's nice to wear the block M to work every day! Some favorite pastimes include canoeing down the Chippewa River with the boys, Peloton workouts and generally being outside. I think about playing at Michigan just about every day. There is always something funny that I will think of or some interaction that will come to mind. It's an experience that truly shapes your life. I suppose the best memories include sandwiches from Lido's, getting stuck in MP's driveway, skits at the airport, beating MSU in the rain, and Mock Rock.

Krista Meckley (2001)Krista Meckley (current)

Krista (Meckley) LaRosa

On the 2001 Roster: #9 | Midfield | Junior | Hanover, Pa. (Southwestern)

Since graduating from Michigan, I moved to Rochester, Michigan, and married my college sweetheart and Michigan baseball alumnus, Bill LaRosa. We have two beautiful children -- Brady, our 11-year-old son who plays ice hockey, baseball and tennis, and Aubrey, our 8-year-old daughter who plays soccer, basketball and tennis. Our silver Labrador retriever, Maizie, and bearded dragon, Blue, help to round out our Wolverine family. For over 17 years, I've been employed by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals holding various positions including senior territory manager and operations site administrator for the women's field network. In addition to balancing work and home life, I also enjoy running and playing competitive tennis.

My experience as a Michigan student-athlete has taught me that with commitment, hard work and perseverance, anything is achievable. Michigan legend Bo Schembechler once said, "Those who stay will be champions!" I believe that 'Being a Champion' is more than winning a division, conference or a national title; it's about finding the courage and strength to confront any obstacle put in your path. Being a champion is not about being content or complacent with what you've done in the past; it's about striving to be better every day and making those around you better. A special 'thank you' certainly goes out to Marcia and all the coaches, my teammates, and my parents for their support and guidance through the years. It's truly GREAT to be a Michigan Wolverine!

Katy Moyneur (2001)Katy Moyneur (current)

Katy (Moyneur) Hoadley

On the 2001 Roster: #8 | Midfield | Freshman | Escondido, Calif. (San Pasqual)

I'm back in San Diego with my hubs, Brian, and am in my 15th year as a PE teacher -- currently year 10 at the same K-6 elementary school. My five years at Michigan were some of my BEST memories to date. So many good times off the field from Smurfs to bus rides to Power Rangers and everything in between. On the field we were the underdogs who took down the Terps to become the first women's national champions my freshman year. Then we got tattoos. :) I made lifelong friendships and still keep in touch with many teammates who are all scattered across the country. My current favorite memory is when all the San Diego alumni get together to watch Marcia and Kristi coach on the sidelines!

Molly Powers (2001)Molly Powers (current)

Molly Powers

On the 2001 Roster: #13 | Forward | Junior | Oak Park, Ill. (Oak Park-River Forest)

I am living in Queenstown, New Zealand, with my husband, Eammon, and our two wee field hockey-playing daughters. I'm the general counsel for a risk management and production services company working on TV and film productions globally. Some of my favorite memories are probably not fit for print and all involve tailgating, crowd surfing in the Big House, pranks, etc. But perhaps more fit for print, my U-M education set me up for success in life and was the best foundation for building my career that I could have asked for.

Jessica Rose (2001)Jessica Rose (current)

Jessica (Rose) Shellenberger

On the 2001 Roster: #4 | Forward/Midfield | Junior | Lititz, Pa. (Warwick)

I am in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with my husband Pete (Penn State '01, men's soccer) and kids Evan (11) and Emma (8) and work as a high school health and physical education teacher at Manheim Township High School. I miss the daily camaraderie with a group of women from all over the country and the world! Getting to put on the maize and blue and represent such a prestigious university. I will be forever grateful to the University of Michigan for giving me the knowledge, experiences, skills and passion that I now take into all that I do. We truly are the Leaders and Best, and I work to live that way every day.

Laura Stinson (2001)Laura Stinson (current)

Laura (Stinson) Pitts

On the 2001 Roster: #15 | Back | Senior | Ann Arbor, Mich. (Pioneer)

I am living in San Diego with my hubby, Eric, and kids Lee (5) and Will (3). I am the CEO of Carlsbad Educational Foundation, a non-profit that supports a public school district. One of my favorite memories is the feeling on a Saturday morning field hockey game on a home football Saturday -- super sunny, people absolutely everywhere, including random people stopping on the Stadium Blvd. bridge to check out our game, plus the bounce house for the kids, loud warm-up music. Absolutely nothing like it. Also, the drive home after any big win but especially after the championship, and the reception we got from the athletic community after our win; everyone came out that night to celebrate. Anneke's pronunciation of croissant and Applebee's. Steph Johnson dancing in the locker room before every game. When Marcia would pull out the yellow jerseys and we knew it was ON. Yellow dominated. The first day of practice as a freshman when you get your new gear. Pushing workout partner and body builder Jenny Zangara in the weight room. Summer workouts with Jason and other random athletes -- pushing blocks was the worst. I may be a nerd but I swear I would do every day of college again if I had the chance.

Maureen Tasch (2001)Maureen Tasch (current)

Maureen (Tasch) Kline

On the 2001 Roster: #22 | Goalkeeper | Senior | Ann Arbor, Mich. (Pioneer)

After college, I moved to Chicago to start my teaching career. I spent two years with the same group of kids, teaching them first and second grade on Chicago's West Side, and the experience opened my eyes to the social injustices in our world and in public education. After that, I earned my master's in reading education from Eastern Michigan and married my husband, Ryan Kline. We currently live in Dexter, Michigan, with our two sons, Dallin (10) and Will (9). Over the years, our boys have helped us to provide a second family to five foster children, all of with whom we continue to communicate. Currently, I teach second grade in Dexter.

I am forever grateful for my U-M field hockey experience. I can truly appreciate living outside of my comfort zone, as I know it can lead to great rewards. Being a goalkeeper in any sport can be a lonely job. My fondest memories are practices working with Katie Oakes and Peggy Storrar, or Molly Maloney and Nancy Cox, receiving the "goalie love" we needed on our own end of the turf. At the end of practice, I looked forward to practicing corners. Defensive corners were exhilarating! Our defense had great faith in one another. I'd love to put on pads and have another few rounds. The wet turf, the sunshine, and camaraderie were the perfect way to end a day. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to pass on the love of physical activity, outdoors, challenge and teamwork to another generation.

Jessie Veith (2001)Jessie Veith (current)

Jessie (Veith) Rouleau

On the 2001 Roster: #14 | Forward | Senior | Oak Park, Ill. (Oak Park-River Forest)

I live in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, with my husband, Vince, and two kids, Sam (13) and Mia (11). I'm the varsity field hockey coach at Grosse Pointe South High School and the youth field hockey supervisor at The Neighborhood Club of Grosse Pointe. Among my favorite Michigan memories are meeting the other 1998 freshmen on campus before running our first gauntlet, and then jumping on a plane to play with the team for the first time in Australia, and picking up Georgie there. Marcia, Tray and Peggy turning the hose on us when we were "decorating" Marcia's house. Beating UNC for the first time (during my four years) in the spring of 1999. Lo, Mo, George and Ali -- so many memories of our four years together.

Laura Woitkewitsch (2001)Laura Woitkewitsch (current)

Laura (Woitkewitsch) Barta

On the 2001 Roster: #11 | Forward/Midfield | Freshman | Cologne, Germany (Friedrich-Wilhelm)

When I finished school, I moved back to Bavaria where Bjoern played ice hockey. I simultaneously got my psychology master's in Salzburg, Austria, then lived in Nuremberg, Bavaria (2008-13), where I worked in a clinic and got my license to become a psychotherapist. With the birth of our daughter, Lotti, in 2013, I moved back to my hometown, Cologne, to be closer to my parents. When Bjoern finished his career as a professional hockey player, he also moved to Cologne and now works for a male fashion company and keeps himself busy as a youth hockey coach. I stopped working in a clinic after our son Pavel was born in 2017 and started my own psychotherapy practice in downtown Cologne, which gives me more time for my family and my kids' activities. We all play tennis, Lotti loves horse riding, and Pavel plays ice hockey and soccer. I really hope that one day my kids will have the same chance to become a Wolverine -- when I look back, it still doesn't feel real to me; it's just like in the movies. Being a Wolverine was the best and most intense time of my life. It taught me so many things and showed me the real meaning of the words resilience, endurance and mental toughness. I'm a charter member of the German Sports Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Society, which takes care of mental health issues in competitive and professional sports. I am also working as an athlete counselor and sort of a field hockey scout an organization that helps German and Dutch athletes to connect with U.S. universities.

On the 2001 Roster: #10 | Forward | Redshirt Freshman | Toledo, Ohio (Ottawa Hills)

Don't tell Marcia, but at 40, I'm spending more time focused on field hockey than I did at 20. Living in Ann Arbor, just a stone's throw from Ocker Field, and coaching two daughters who have grown to love the game more with each year, I'm more grateful for the experience and lifelong friendships Michigan field hockey has afforded me. I met my husband Brad at Michigan, and we have three kids, Gabrielle (12), Nick (10) and Ali (7). When not in Ann Arbor, we are either at a kid's sport event somewhere, usually without adequate shopping, or in our happy place in Glen Arbor, Michigan. With each year that passes, my appreciation for the Michigan field hockey family grows, and I'm thankful to have been a small part of an amazing community.
