West Boylston teen creates raised garden for church as Eagle Scout project

WEST BOYLSTON - For more than half his life, Isana Kunst has been involved in Boy Scouts.

Now, he has reached the pinnacle, completing his Eagle Scout project. The Eagle Scout is the highest honor for Boy Scouts.

The raised garden beds he built were dedicated on Sunday, Sept. 12.

Church member Molly McArthur holds the board as Scout Isana Kunst screws it together on a raised garden bed he built as part of his Eagle Scout project at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Holden.

Kunst, 16, lives in West Boylston and is a student at Leominster High School, enrolled in the CTEi graphics communications program.

"Through the support my family showed and memories I made with my friends in Scouting over the past 10 years, I made it to Eagle Scout," Isana said. "As a big thank you to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Holden, which have let Troop 175, of Holden,"

The COVID-19 pandemic proved an inconvenience, but Isana was able to make it work.

"Even with the precautions that made it difficult to meet in person while planning, and the skyrocketing rates for supplies during the situation. I was able to get it done, but not without the great team that I had an opportunity to lead and work with," he said. "It was my first time leading a team and was a learning experience for everyone. I hope for years to come many can enjoy the beautiful floral and vegetables planted for the community."

Isana had family support for the project

"I am very proud of my son's accomplishments and working on this project. It taught him patience, how to research prices, and work with others," his father, Jason said. "Also to work with being thrifty by trying to get reduced pricing. It’s not only a major commitment for the Scout, but also for the family  - if they’re involved - to help push along.

"Frustrating and overwhelming at times for all.," Jason Kunst added.
