Boston Art Song Society has announced that Mason Bynes will be its 2021-22 Composer in Residence.

Bynes is a Boston-based composer who has been commissioned by such organizations as The Westerlies & Festival of New Trumpet Music, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Bass Players for Black Composers, and Lumedia Musicworks, among others.

Bynes’ vocal music will be showcased in every concert throughout the 2021-22 season with a world premiere set for May 2022.

“I am honored to have been selected as Boston Art Song Society’s Composer in Residence this season. To have the opportunity to collaborate with vocalists on music that is informed by my own experience as a trained vocalist is so special. I love collaborating with singers, as it is deeply fulfilling and synergistic to connect with performers on both the craft of the composition and the craft of vocal performance and storytelling,” Byrnes said in a press release. “With this residency, I aspire to showcase original music that displays the different ways in which I resonate as a vocalist. I’ve sung in operas, chamber choirs, baroque ensembles, jazz choirs, folk duos and I have also performed and composed as a singer/songwriter.  The voice is multifaceted and ever changing, and by bringing genres together I hope to bring music that liberates the voice and liberates the soul that fuels the singer.”
