Idalou football remains unbeaten, hands New Deal first loss in state-ranked battle
IDALOU — Kelly Koch ran for three touchdowns, including two in the first quarter, as Idalou downed New Deal 28-14 on Friday at Reddell Field.
The result pushed the Wildcats to 5-0, while New Deal (4-1) suffered its first loss.
Idalou wasted little time opening the scoring. After a 24-yard kickoff return by Mitchell Mangan, the Wildcats marched 46 yards on four plays for their first TD. Koch took a handoff up the middle for a 23-yard score.
After a Lions punt, the fullback Koch capped Idalou's second drive with a 50-yard burst.
The Wildcats scored on their first three possessions, with Tyler Jack running for a 4-yard TD to make it 21-0 late in the opening frame.
Koch's third TD made it 28-7 with 2:01 left in the third quarter before New Deal made it interesting.
Two plays after a Damoria Hall interception, quarterback Harley Patterson scrambled for a 15-yard score to bring the Lions within 28-14.
New Deal recovered the ensuing onside kick and drove to the Idalou 27-yard line, but the Lions couldn't come up with a catch near the sideline on fourth-and-9.
Both teams have an open week before starting district play Oct. 8.
