It was a memorable day and night for Trent White.

The Monterey senior running back, who attended the funeral of his mother earlier in the day, honored her memory by putting together a stellar first-half performance Friday against Lubbock High in a District 2-5A Division I game.

The 5-foot-11, 220-pound athlete carried the ball six times for 208 yards and three touchdowns — outgaining the entire Westerners offense in the first two quarters — as the Plainsmen rolled to a 62-7 victory at Lowrey Field at PlainsCapital Park.

"You never know, we were expecting him to play," Monterey head coach Wayne Hutchinson said. "But, you never know how a kid's going to feel with the emotions you have to go through with a funeral. And then to come back and put it together.

"I think he had a mission tonight. I think he played to honor his mom (Lataiya R. White, also known by "Tai"). And you could tell by the way he was running. He was on a mission."

With the victory, Monterey (3-2, 1-0) responded following a road loss to Lubbock-Cooper and continued to keep the Silver Spurs for another year as part of the in-town rivalry with Lubbock High (1-4, 0-1).

Monterey’s Trent White (6) runs the ball during the first half of the team’s high school football game against Lubbock on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021 at Lowrey Field in PlainsCapital Park in Lubbock, Texas.

At the onset, the Westerners appeared to be putting together a solid offensive drive to start the contest.

Quarterback Jonathan Cisneros helped Lubbock High notch a pair of first downs before he scrambled, lost control of the football and Monterey linebacker Zykendric Johnson pounced on it at the LHS 39.

"It was a frustrating evening, that's for sure," Lubbock High coach Shane Stephen said. "I thought the offensive line did a good job protecting (Cisneros), opening up some holes. We just didn't finish tonight."

From there, White did the rest as he got the handoff and sprinted his way to a 39-yard touchdown — his first of three first-half scores — to provide a 7-0 advantage to the Plainsmen at the 9:20 mark of the first quarter.

Monterey’s Kashious Lewis (17) scores a touchdown during the first half of the team’s high school football game against Lubbock on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021 at Lowrey Field in PlainsCapital Park in Lubbock, Texas.

Lubbock High put together a six-play drive before the Monterey defense forced a punt and provided its offense another chance to increase the scoring gap.

After starting from their own 30, the Plainsmen marched down the field and had the drive capped off with D.J. Williams throwing a 38-yard pass to Lawens Mann for the 14-0 lead with 5:49 left in the first.

It wasn't all smiles though for White, who after his third touchdown was brought down after a gain of 3 yards and sprung up before making contact with an official and earning a pair of personal foul penalties which caused an ejection with the game in hand for the Plainsmen.

By halftime, White accumulated 208 yards, which matched what the Westerners amassed to that point as a team on offense.

"I can't describe what's going on in that young man's mind," Hutchinson said of White. "All I can tell you is this: he's a strong young man. And he has handled it well.

"Prayers for him, and peace and comfort because everybody deals with things differently. He's a strong young man."
