HS sports roundup: Whitesboro field hockey stuns Camden in OT behind senior co-captains

The Whitesboro field hockey team came back to defeat Camden 4-3 in overtime on Friday. Pictured are the Warriors' 10 seniors.

The Whitesboro field hockey team had dropped five of their past six games entering play Friday, and going into halftime against visiting Camden trailing 3-1, things didn’t look promising. Behind two of their senior co-captains, the Warriors stormed back to force overtime and eventually pull out a dramatic 4-3 victory.

Backed by single goals from Lily Howe, Emily Bird and Jadyn Prievo, the Blue Devils carried its two-score edge into intermission, but Whitesboro cut into the deficit with one goal in the third. Early in the fourth, Angie Cirasuolo put in the equalizer and both team’s defenses held strong for the remainder of regulation.

“At halftime, we were kind of quiet, so I kind of lit a fire under them. … The fourth quarter was a completely different story,” Warriors coach Renee LaValley said. “It was definitely a big win.”

With just 1:13 left in the first overtime period, Cirasuolo struck again, finding the back of the cage for the game-winning goal. Fellow senior co-captain Emma Scranton provided the assist.

Goalie Megan Brinck – who was inactive on Friday due to an injury – is the third senior co-captain of the group.

“Both Emma and Angie are key, key players in our program,” LaValley said. “Both are captains and both act as vocal leaders and lead by example.”

Cirasuolo and Scranton both tallied assists in the win, and freshman Casey Clausen had the other goal for Whitesboro.

LaValley noted that entering high school three years ago, field hockey wasn’t the primary fall sport for either Cirasuolo or Scranton.

“They both have an interesting story, too. They used to play soccer but joined the field hockey team for their freshman year and have been on varsity since then,” the coach said. “They both give 110%, and if I could have 100 of them I would.”

Senior Rebecca Thomas, who usually plays defense, stepped up in net on Friday and recorded eight saves.
