Jackson County

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help after finding a man dead alongside a rural farm road earlier this week.

About 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, deputies discovered the man’s body along Farm-to-Market Road 234 north of U.S. 59 and El Toro, Sheriff Andy Louderback said Friday.

That man, who is thought to be in his 40s or 50s, has not been identified.

Although investigators are still working to understand what happened, they have at least two reasons to suspect foul play.

Investigators think the man may have died more than a week ago and then was dumped along the farm road, Louderback said.

The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office, which has been asked to complete an autopsy, has found suspicious evidence relating the man’s death.

Louderback declined to go into further detail, saying doing so could hurt the investigation, which is still in an early stage.

As of Friday, investigators had no suspects, and medical examiner officials had yet to make an official ruling on his cause of death, Louderback said.

Investigators are still working to figure out how the man died, but Louderback said authorities have noted some similarities in recent Crossroads cases involving human smuggling and trafficking.

In July, Victoria County deputies discovered another man dead along a highway after receiving a tip that someone had died during an immigrant smuggling operation.

Anyone with information relevant to the man or his death is asked to contact the investigations department at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office at 361-782-3541.
