Authorities unsure of circumstances surrounding body found in Edmond ditch
UPDATED: The Department of Public Safety Friday evening identified the man as Edmond resident Christopher Dunlap, 26. He was a passenger in the vehicle and died of "massive blunt force injuries." Authorities are investigating what happened.
A body was found in a ditch along an Edmond road, and police say it’s possible the man was hit by a car.
Police made the grim discovery this morning at Broadway and Charter Oak. Neighbors said they’ve been worried about the area for some time.
Police haven’t said whether speed was a factor in the death, but the people who live nearby said they’ve been working with the county to make the area safer.
“We’re investigating it as an auto-pedestrian right now,” said Trooper Eric Foster with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
OHP received the call around 7 a.m. Friday that someone saw a dead man in the grass at Broadway and Charter Oak.
“It appears from evidence at the scene that the male was struck and was deceased after that,” Foster said.
Troopers don’t know who was driving or what happened.
“It’s right after this stop sign, so traffic would have been either coming to a stop or just now accelerating, so it wouldn’t have been a super high rate of speed,” Foster said.
Neighbors said they’ve been worried about speed along the road for some time. And, just this month, Logan County installed stop signs to slow people down in the area.
“The local residents really like it because now the cross-traffic stops, in addition to the traffic on Broadway, stops during rush hour and everybody gets in and out a lot safer than it was before,” Logan County Commissioner Marven Goodman said.
“It’s not highly traveled right here early in the morning, and so we’re trying to gather all the information we can,” Foster said.
Neighbors also said they are thankful for the new stop signs, which were put up in early September. They feared things could’ve been worse without them.
